Would like a camera that is better suited for action but do not understand why Sony continues to only offer To entoman, having owned a Sony A7RII previously, I can say that there are no overlays or anything similar offered unfortunately..

As mentioned the fixed lens RX1R2 does this perfectly.. It is similar to the Fuji GFX in that you select a "aspect ratio" but it still captures the whole sensor area with a mask in editing software showing the original "aspect ratio".

I'd love to match images with my Micro Four Thirds cameras. With 42MP on the sensor, I can afford to give up a few pixels for this. I also much prefer to Thanks for the reply You can record in 4K and scale down to UHD without loss of aspect ratio or distortion. You can not record in UHD and upscale to 4K without creating distortion.

Even if it is minor distortion pixel peepers that cry about an 'AA' filter should be complaining about the difference between 4K and UHD. Many are tack sharp and many are unusable. I focus manually ,shoot raw, and steady shot is on. My sony zeiss 35mm is not having that problem. Now more than a year after buying it, I couldn't be happier with my A7rII.

The overall combination of the 42mp bsi sensor, a great autofocus system, absolutley necessary IBIS, and some really high quality lenses, just consistently delivers a level of image quality that is totally rewarding. There are a lot of "nits" in the discussion about how the camera could be better about this or that. And I suppose they make a difference, but not for me as an everyday shooter.

To be4 able to point a camera like this with a non stabilized lens like the FE F1. The A7R was an amazing start to this revolution, but there were things about the A7r which often affected image quality. But not the A7RII. It is, in my opinion, the closest thing to a perfect camera experience for the every day user that exists, even now, a year after it came out. Nothing in the help or the manual. Could this be the same?

So I don't have to buy a bunch of new high-quality lenses. I think it's a godsend. Did I read that it is silent? I hardly use my A7r except for landscapes as it is so noisy.

There is an option to have it operate completely silently, yes, using a fully electronic as opposed to mechanical shutter. The silent shutter mode is nice, but unfortunately you can't use it with a lot of other things such as flash or continuous shooting mode. Actually, you can use it with flickering light sources. You just have to be careful what shutter speed you use to minimize banding. This is normal behavior for electronic shutters, but I read one of Canon's new cameras implements some kind of anti-banding algorithm or something.

No one is "chocked" that they are testing both Nikon and Canon with a Sigma lens which is known for not being good in low light.. We got the same results shooting on-brand lenses. In some cases, the Sigma lens actually outperformed some on-brand lenses. When we followed up this test with the same Sigma lens, the a7R II performed even better. But we didn't go back and remake the video just to address these points when the outcome and overarching points would be the same: that the a7R II can catch up to DSLRs in low light if you attach fast lenses e.

Funny thing that: "Ergonomics or human factors is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system," My wife's Honda Jazz's ergonomics are also really stupid.

Maybe Japanese programmers need courses in ergonomics. Hopefully Sony can eventually marry the superb A7R II optics with properly thought-out controls and then we will really have a superb camera. It has less to do with nationality than with corporate culture. Panasonic gets ergonomics and UI much righter than Sony.

And, Olympus gets controls really right, if not necessarily UI. I wonder how does it work with analogue Minolta lenses or third party ones? Does it need to have an adopter before putting the analogue lens on the body? Please explain it to me as I would like to know more about it. Is there any problems with this combination of adapter, analogue lens, and body or not? I would appreciate to show me some example of images. Thanks for answering this question.

You will need a lens adapter to make an A mount work with the E-mount. LA-EA3 or 4 if your focus on your lens is a screw drive. Anyone knows if the limitations of interrupted live view during bursts is addressed in the latest firmware update?

I'm not convinced as its reactions are much slower than mine with offbrand lenses. THe figur comes from the performance tests on Imaging Resource. I really wanted one of these or an A7R as 36MP is enough for me just couldn't go ahead fixated on the lag of that first camera. I have and use an a which is very nice and has very little lag, but would have preferred full-frame , by a lot as a streetshooter stuck with Britain's very low lighting conditions for much of the year compared to say India or California so I have stayed with a very fast DSLR as my favourite D But for me the deal-killer in Sony world has to be the appalling power supply situation, which means that you can do so little with a fully charged battery that then demands 5 hour I mean its a joke, right?

Amazing camera. By the way, the creativity has to come from you. The camera, any camera is a tool. I have both the Sigma and the Canon lenses, and would prefer a single adapter that can adapt it all and adapt it GOOD! Forget all the crap you read about the menu and controls: it works just fine and produces best images - ever, so far. Agree on the IQ, but if your menu item isn't on a custom button, it's a drag.

A contextual menu ie: if you're in pano mode - all things related to pano are in one menu , and a favorites list - so you can have your favorite functions in one place - would be a simple great thing to do. And yes - the dials are oddly imprecise.

Why is it stressed in the conclusion that both "class-leading low light performance" and "impressive dynamic range" in Raw? Are these two class leading and impressive things change when come to jpeg?

Had one on loan. Did not like it at all. AF was not reliable. Also it did not feel like a creative tool, it felt like a Star Trek prop. You need to spend more time with it and learn it. Awesome camera. BTW, the creativity needs to come from you. The camera, any camera, is a tool.

Nice technology, but so far, the colors people get out of these cameras do not look optimal to me. Magenta skies, strange skin tones, somehow just underwhelming. I think it means that light comes from under the thinned silicon and not where it normally comes, where metal is.

It also want help much if you explain it here. This comment will probably be comment No one will see this. You're right, it essentially means that you build up your sensor then shave the substrate off the back and use that the back side in conventional terms as the front of the sensor, meaning that light doesn't have to pass through the circuitry to get to the photodiode itself.

It's easy for us to forget that, although we've written about it many times over the years, it's not necessarily common knowledge. I'll see if I can sneak a bit more detail into the article. Is there actually such a key as Focus Hold button that you list in your table? I can't find it on camera pictures and in the user manual.

Please, review and correct if necessary. Focus Hold is lens dependent. The 90 has one FH button and the has three of them. Made the jump to using raw files. But now neither Sony's Play Memories, nor any of my older versions of Photoshop and Dxomark editors work, and I can't update them because my computer operating system is Windows Vista?

Any suggestions? This is why I do not trust raw files. They are not standard file types such as JPEG. So, today having difficulty reading them imagine years from now the then computers and software will not be able to read them. For those that doubt that, Adobe and their ilk dropped support for many of the older raw files cameras not sold and long out of date. Thus, folks that want to use their original now very old raw files will not be able to open them.

Raw file formats change by vendor and camera model. In fact I have seen them change with firmware upgrades. Yes, raw has advantages, however, a properly setup camera should not need to shoot raw. If one is using raw for PP correcting issues they are doing something wrong. JPEG is good for quite large blowups, and spectacular images. For me shooting JPEG my workflow and time on computer greatly diminished, but not image quality. Most photographers I know shooting raw are more proud of their computer skills than photography skills.

Then convert to dng. RAW provides better quality and more flexibility, not to mention more powerful processing. JPEG allows for 8 bits of one color value, giving shades of Green, for example. Raw works in 14 or 12 bits of a color. It means there are still details in the shadows, or in the highlights you can adjust that would otherwise be lost to full black or full white.

Much of these will blow out, unless you decrease the contrast before you output to JPEG. Output to TIFF and it can put those 14 bits in TIFFs are huge but they preserve all the subtlety you spent so much to capture.

I was in Luxembourg last week for the first time, and spent much of the week shooting with my A7RII, and lenses. I couldn't wait for Canon to move on mirrorless any longer.

I jumped to Sony and, so far, I have almost no complaints with the camera. Some of the controls are a bit fiddling - the front finger dial seems to always allude me. But that's about it. If there's any doubt about Sony's low-light performance, well, take a look at the photos above. There is only one tripod shot in that entire set can you find it? The rest are all hand-held. I have never used anything like this. It's fantastic. And the autofocus nailed almost every single frame. I can't talk highly enough about it.

I had rented the original RX-1 a few years ago, and passed on buying one because the AF was so terrible. Not so the 7RII. Thanks again. Thanks again for the help. Just wanted to say thank you for the clear explanation! Without this a is useless camera for vlogers video shooting…. Thanks for pointing that out. I did not realize that phone WiFi functionality was the entire measure of the quality of a camera.

That explains why Deardorf went out of business despite the above average snaps Ansel Adams shot with them. Any idea how I can get this looked at? I have the a7rii. Any news on this? This is very frustrating when shooting video and not being able to shoot slog. Thank you! The request has been passed along as an added feature request. I would not expect any changes to what is currently there.

Thank you for your article. I wanted to use iPad as viewfinders output screen and It works pretty well except the fact it has very limited functionality… Hope this will be improved soon. Good sample to use as a reference is Camranger for Canons and Nikons. A free WiFi app will never have the functionality of a hardware-based product like CamRanger. My advice is to contact CamRanger and tell them you want a Sony version. Hi Brian, thanks for your info.

Is there a way to increase the range to an iPad or iPhone? I use a Camranger with my Nikon and it has a foot range. Not sure if this is posted, but with the latest version you can double tap the screen and it will focus at that point. Very handy feature of the app. I am using 3. The only control available is the shutter, the arc does not appear on the screen. I just shut the auto HDR and tried it… it took over 20 secs.

I cannot provide support for phone issues. I only own an iPhone and have neither the time nor inclination to test any other models. Can you use this app also just to let somebody view what you are filming in video mode? As an wireless extra monitor? Is there any solution to that issue? It is very important for me. Make certain both your camera firmware and camera apps are updated to the latest version. Maybe this is the problem. Because I tested Fuji xT and it works.

It works perfect! Thank you very much, Brian! Brian, Thank you for your thoroughness in writing this article. I use the a for real estate photography. My question is: Do you know of a way to delete images while being tethered to the iPad mini? Also, do you know if the app functions normally with the camera screen turned off?

Trying to save a little battery life while working. Thanks in advance for your time. Thank you so much for this post. I just received my RX V and this helped me to set up the remote trigger feature. GREAT information here. EASY to understand. Thanks much for this information. Saved me hours of fumbling around in the dark trying to figure this out. Previous 1 Introduction. Sony a7 key features Bionz X Processor The company's latest processor, dubbed Bionz X for reasons that presumably made sense to someone, is considerably more powerful than the previous generation, allowing what the company says is more sophisticated processing. Lenses While the a7 has an E-mount, you'll need to use Sony's new FE-series lenses to take advantage of its full-frame sensor.

The first five Sony FE lenses include two standard zooms, two primes, and a tele zoom We're slightly surprised by Sony's strategy here: it seems a bit odd to be making two different standard zooms to start with, rather than adding a wide-angle zoom.

The Sigma 56mm may be my first choice, but I realise some of you might be on a budget, and this is where the Viltrox comes in. Like the 23mm, it is only available in silver for Eos M cameras the one in the photo above is the Fujifilm version. If you want a good portrait lens with autofocus without spending the extra money for the Sigma 56mm, the Viltrox is the next best thing. The click-less aperture ring allows you to make smooth aperture changes unlike with the Fuji X version and the lens only has a small amount of focus breathing.

Check price of the Viltrox AF 56mm F1. Here is another manual focus lens that gave me a pleasant surprise. It comes with a few trade-offs like all cheap lenses , but it works well for portraits. It has a clicking aperture ring and the steps are a bit weak.

There is a fair amount of focus breathing as well. But if you can get past these negative points, you can certainly put its fast aperture and nice bokeh to good use for video work. Check price of the TTArtisan 50mm F1. Note : my copy of the lens came with a metal hood in a separate box, so double check yours before buying one. When choosing a third party lens hood, make sure the thread is 52mm and select one designed for the the 50mm lens 75mm equivalent.

Macro is a fascinating genre to discover. It has a super macro mode 1. Yes, for the same reasons stated above. The AF motor is very silent but can hunt for focus at close distances. Check price of the Canon 28mm F3. The Canon 28mm is a great macro lens, but the focal length is short and forces you to be very close to your tiny subject. The 7Artisans 60mm gives you a bit more distance, and that can make macro work easier especially if you have accessories around you or additional light sources. Note : I tested the mark I version of this lens, but recently 7Artisans released the mark II version which is supposed to have a more robust build quality and better optics.

All in all, it sounds like a better product for almost the same price, so I listed the mark II version in the affiliate links below. Make sure to get the mark II version. The mark I sample we tested has a huge amount of focus breathing you basically lose the magnification as soon as you focus away from the shortest distance.

I hope the mark II version does a little better in this regard. Check price of the 7Artisans 60mm F2. Photographing a small bird, or your child playing football outside, requires a long telephoto lens. The availability for the Eos M system is limited, and for now we decided to mention just the one below. It is soft at mm, the optical stabilisation is average, and the zoom ring on my copy moved a bit too freely.

The other alternative is the Tamron mm that I mentioned earlier in the All-Purpose Lenses chapter. Note that at mm, it is difficult to be completely stable. With perhaps the exception of a few compact primes, most DSLR lenses are larger and heavier than any lens I mentioned in this article.

Of course, there can be exceptions. There are also third party adapters that do the same thing like Viltrox and Commlite, for example, although the autofocus can be a bit slower. Another option is a Speed Booster adapter also known as focal reducer like the 0.

Furthermore, it makes the lens 1 stop faster. Below is an example with a similar adapter and a lens for full frame cameras Sigma 35mm F1. The result is similar to having a It could be particularly helpful if you want to record 4K on cameras that have a severe sensor crop see Useful Information chapter at the beginning of the article.

Also, bear in mind that there can be a bit of image quality degradation when using such an adapter, and this can vary from brand to brand. It is the opening of the internal lens diaphragm that lets the light pass through and reach the sensor.

With a small aperture ex. The ability of a lens to render tiny fine details in your image. Very often, sharpness peaks at the mid aperture values. Sharpness in the corners is often weaker than at the centre, especially when using wide apertures. The better a lens is from an optical point of view, the better it can render optimal sharpness across the frame and at any aperture.

The ability of a lens to render lines as straight as possible, without making them appear bent or curvy. Many modern lenses have a small amount of distortion, but cameras can apply corrections automatically when generating the image. Note that this excludes perspective distortion, which is not an optical distortion but a natural effect when for example, you focus close to a subject with a wide-angle lens. Also known as light fall-off, it is present when the corners of the image are darker than the centre.

It usually disappears as you stop down close the aperture. The intensity varies from lens to lens. Modern lenses correct this electronically with the camera. As a result, elements in your photo that have a clear contrast ex. Once again, modern lenses should correct it automatically via the camera software. Manual focus lenses often exhibit a certain amount, especially at fast apertures.
